A Quick Remark

Birthday Present…Piano?

I’ve always felt comfortable in front of 88 keys. I started playing the piano when I was six. I wasn’t very good, and to be honest, I’m not all that great now. It’s been quite a while since I’ve sat down in front of a piano.

I started playing on a keyboard and when I turned eight my parents purchased a piano. It’s a Samick stand-up. Not the best kind of piano, but I spent countless hours sitting in front of that thing. I took lessons for 10 years. I didn’t get to choose what I wanted to play for class, but it taught me the basics of music theory and it taught me the framework of piano playing. The rest of the time I sat at the piano and just did whatever. Sometimes it was just gibberish and other times it was trying to figure out songs on the radio. All of it was amazing and a blast. I found that I could spend hours upon hours at a piano and have no clue what was going on in the world around me.

My parents never gave away that piano even though it sat idle for years. I miss it a great deal, and it frustrates me a great deal because I feel like I can’t play it at anymore. It’s like I’ve forgotten what it feels like to sit at a piano. I just don’t know how to anymore. I keep talking about sitting down and just wailing on it. Hopefully I’ll get that chance. I might be a little too self-conscious to do it with an audience though.

The day before my birthday, my wife picked me up from work so we could get home early enough for our son’s spaghetti dinner. I walked into the house and when I went to put down my backpack, sitting right there was my piano. The one I grew up with. My wife had asked my parents and my sister if we could have it, and paid for movers to bring it over to surprise me. I think it took a good 2 full minutes before I was able to close my mouth. It was awesome!!! I love you baby!!! Thank you!!!!

wow! that’s such a great surprise! i totally know how you feel though. I stare at chad’s piano and feel ashamed sometimes that I may have forgotten how to even play it. I’ve even looked into taking lessons again to get back into it, but just haven’t found the time…
